Phil Regan, who pitched in MLB from 1960 through 1972 with the Tigers, Dodgers, Cubs, and White Sox, passed away on Wednesday. He was 89 years old.
Regan was one of the first great relief pitchers of the modern era. In 1966, he enjoyed one of the greatest seasons ever by a reliever, going 14-1 with a 1.62 ERA and 21 saves in 116.2 innings. In 1968, Regan pitched 134.2 innings and led the Major Leagues with 25 saves. He finished his career with 92 saves and 96 wins, 58 of them in relief.
Eternal rest grant to him, Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
He was called The Vulture for getting wins instead of the starting pitcher.
